Financial Aid

Eligibility for Repeating Coursework

As per federal regulations, Butte College may allow repeated courses to count for financial aid awarding under the following condition:

  • When a student is repeating, for the first time only (i.e. one repetition per class), a previously passed course in a semester-based program. "Passed" means any grade higher than an 'F' (a 'D' is considered a passing grade), regardless of any college or program policy requiring a higher qualitative grade for the course. Bottom line: if you receive a passing grade in a course two times, and you enroll in it a third time, the course will not count for financial aid the third time.

Example: John enrolled in Math 124 and received a 'D' grade but needed a 'C' grade for it to count toward his degree. The next semester, John enrolled in Math 124 for the second time and received another 'D' grade. John decided to retake it for the third time but now the course is considered ineligible for financial aid.

Note: A student enrolled in non-term-based programs may NOT receive credit for retaking coursework. Students enrolled in clock-hour programs should check with the Financial Aid Office about specific hour-based policies.

As per federal regulations, Butte College CANNOT allow repeated courses to count for financial aid awarding under the following two conditions:

  • When a student repeats a previously passed course due to failing other coursework required to be taken simultaneously by a specific academic program.

Example: Jane enrolls in four classes in the fall semester, passes three of them and fails one. The specific academic program that she is pursuing requires her to retake the three passed classes because she failed the one class. Jane then enrolls in all four classes for the spring semester. According to federal regulations, the failed class will count for federal aid but the three classes previously passed in the fall cannot be counted toward payable units.

  • When a student repeats a previously passed course for the sole purpose of gaining eligibility for financial aid.

Additional Information

Students on Maximum Timeframe Appeal: should note that Maximum Timeframe Appeal Policies prohibit them from receiving financial aid to repeat courses with grades of 'D,' 'F,' 'FW' or 'W'. See Acknowledgment of Maximum Timeframe Appeal Policies on Maximum Timeframe Appeal.

Students enrolled in Career Work Experience or General Work Experience: should note that federal course repetition policies only allow units from the first two enrollments (same course number) to be used toward Financial Aid eligibility. See Work Experience
