Dear Students, 

As we announced last week, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, many in-person Butte College classes will be held online for the first two weeks (January 24 – February 4) of the spring semester.  This is a temporary measure.  A limited number of courses designated as “difficult to convert,” such as our law enforcement academies and career technical programs, will proceed as scheduled with additional safety measures in place.   

There are several things you should do to prepare for the spring semester: 

Access your Butte College email.  Updates from the college and your instructors will be sent to your student email address, so please check it frequently.  To learn how to access your Butte College email, you can watch this video or go to lrrzz.goudounet.com, click on the red box "MyBC Portal," and then click on the box "Email." 

Check your classes in Canvas.  You can log in to Canvas from the Butte College home page, via your MyBC Portal, or directly at http://canvas.goudounet.com.  You can get help with Canvas from the Canvas Support Team or by searching the Canvas student guides.  Remember, Canvas and Zoom are accessible from your phone; you can use them with a browser or by downloading the apps.  

Access Student Services.  From January 24 through February 4, Student Services will offer services remotely.  If you cannot access services remotely, please contact individual departments for support.  You can find a list of services and how to reach them here.   

Stay safe!  Starting January 24, free Covid-19 testing will be available to current students on the main campus and at Chico Center.  If you feel sick or have been exposed to someone with Covid, you can get tested for no charge on campus starting January 24.  The testing schedule is posted on Butte College’s Covid-19 web page.  The Student Health Clinic provides Covid-19 vaccinations for Butte College students.  You may drop in between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. but are encouraged to call 530-895-2441 for availability.  The clinic currently has both the Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines available. Johnson & Johnson boosters are also available.

Happy New Year, and I hope you are doing well. As we prepare for the start of the spring semester, we are not in the position we had hoped for. Please be assured, however, that everyone at Butte College is working diligently to keep students and staff safe while ensuring your educational success.

Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases both locally and nationally, Butte College leadership has decided that most in-person classes will be held online for the first two weeks (January 24 – February 4) of the spring semester. This is a temporary measure that we hope will get us through the worst of this surge.  We plan to return classes to their previously scheduled modalities starting February 7. A limited number of courses designated as “difficult to convert,” such as our law enforcement academies and career technical programs, will proceed as scheduled with additional safety measures in place. We are working on updating the course schedule to indicate which courses will be impacted by the two-week transition to remote instruction. Please be sure to check your classes on the web page or in your portal for specific instructions.

Until February 4, Student Services will only offer services remotely. If you cannot access services remotely, please contact individual departments for support.  The Butte College bus will run as indicated on the spring schedule.

It bears repeating that we are, again, facing rapidly changing circumstances. Please be sure to check your Butte College student email frequently. We look forward to a great spring semester and seeing you on campus soon.

Dear Students,

Yesterday the Board passed Board Policy 5900 COVID-19 Vaccinations for Students. The policy states, “Students are encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are required to follow testing and safety measures established by the administration based on federal, state, and local public health guidance.” This policy is purposefully very generally written to allow us to come up with procedures that will work best with our student population.

To that end, I as Vice President for Student Services will lead a task force of faculty, staff, and students to draft procedures for this policy. In addition, we will hold a forum for students to discuss this new policy before the end of the semester. 

It is important that we get this right. Keeping everyone safe on campus is paramount but we do not want to create unnecessary barriers for our students. Developing a procedure that balances safety and access in a comprehensive manner will take time.  It is safe to say we will not have procedures in place before the spring semester. Therefore, this policy will not create any changes in how students access classes or services in the short term. My hope is that we will have procedures in place before students start to register for summer and fall classes with the goal of full implementation in summer 2022.

Navigating this new landscape has been difficult for everyone, and emotions are running high. I believe we all want the same thing – safe campuses and a return to some kind of normalcy – but we have many different ideas of what that looks like.  It is important that we continue to treat one another respectfully and look for common ground as we chart our course forward.

Dear Students,

We are pleased to announce our COVID-19 Incentive Program is now live!  Students who can prove that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are eligible for a $100 payment from Butte College. Details can be found on the Student Health Clinic Website.

Registration for Winter Session and Spring Semester begins this week. Please check your MyBC portal account for your time to register. We will be offering in-person and online classes for Winter Session and Spring Semester.

Hello Roadrunners,

It is now three weeks since classes began. For those who are attending Butte College for the first time, I hope we have met or exceeded your expectations. For those returning to Butte, our commitment remains unchanged: to go the extra mile and serve you to the best of our ability. These are trying times, but we are truly in this together.

In the prevailing and ever-changing public health environment, we continue to monitor public health guidelines with the goal of assuring you the very best and safest learning environment. Our Safe Reopening Taskforce meets every week to review ongoing developments and make recommendations for action. As long as it remains safe to do so, we are committed to maintaining face-to-face instruction and student services at all our locations. We have developed an elaborate plan and shared this with your instructors, anticipating different scenarios that may require class cancellations or toggling to remote instruction.

Meanwhile, let’s remember these simple steps that many of us are now accustomed to:

1. Butte College requires everyone to wear a mask when indoors and when riding the bus.
2. Wash your hands or sanitize regularly.
3. Get vaccinated. The available vaccines are safe and are proven to reduce infections, severe illness, risk of hospitalization, and death. Butte College remains committed to the $100 vaccine incentive that I announced earlier. In a few weeks, we will launch a third-party platform that will enable you to upload your proof of vaccination so we can send you the $100 incentive.

Return to Campus

As you may recall, in the wake of Governor Newsom’s announcement that California’s economy would be fully open, all Butte College employees were required to return to on-ground work on July 1, 2021. The expectation holds that you will be physically present on campus. Our physical presence adds immensely to the vibrancy of our college. 

There are exceptions with online instruction and employees who have a medical necessity. Please continue to work with your administrator and HR if you teach exclusively online or need a medical accommodation. 

Nota bene: We will continue to livestream events such as Institute Day and the Planning and Budget Forums so that employees with concerns about large gatherings will still have an option to participate.

College Council

We are excited to begin our work in College Council. Some of our first tasks will be to review the Butte College Institutional Effectiveness Manual and revise the Mission Statement. The goal is to have the first draft of the Mission Statement to our constituent groups by November 2 and to the Board of Trustees in December. I will send regular College Council updates to you as our work progresses.

Thank you all again for everything you do for our college and for our students. I am grateful to embark on our journey together through the ’22-’23 Academic Year and can’t wait to celebrate our successes together.

Good Morning Everyone:

As we start moving towards the new academic year, there are a few reminders regarding COVID that I’d like to share. While the overall picture is much better than it has been in terms of the severity of disease and mortality, there are still some procedural requirements that we’re bound to.

• If you’re feeling sick, please don’t come to work. Stay home, take a test, and wait until you feel better before returning.
• Remember to take reasonable safety precautions, such as washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough, using hand sanitizer of at least 60 % alcohol, etc.
• Report all positive COVID tests to covidreporting@goudounet.com
• This is how you will get in touch with your benefits and lets us fulfill our Cal-OSHA mandated reporting requirements.
• Contact HR to access your COVID leave bank if you are home sick with COVID or if you’re home caring for someone who is sick with COVID.
• If you need a medical accommodation, COVID related or not, contact HR.
• At-home COVID tests are available from the Student Health Clinic and at the Chico Center. Email covidreporting@goudounet.com to request some.
• Most drug stores also have a good stock of tests available now as well.
• Masks are not required on campus except in designated healthcare areas.  Individuals wishing to wear masks at any other District locations are certainly welcome to do so.
• N-95 masks (and other PPE) are available from Facilities via an online form.

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday the Board approved BP7330: Disease Management and Prevention and rescinded BP 2900: COVID-19 Vaccinations.  In conjunction with the Board’s decision, the Leadership Team approved AP 7330 and removed AP 2900.  Consequently, as of today, there is no longer a weekly requirement for COVID-19 testing. 

The Board Policy and Administrative Procedure related to COVID-19 for students (BP 5900 and AP 5900) still stand.

Dear Colleagues,

Starting on Monday, March 28 masks will no longer be required indoors in Butte College facilities. 

Here are some of the reasons we are making this change:

• COVID -19 cases and hospitalizations have dropped significantly in both Butte and Glenn Counties.  According to the CDC, both counties are now in the low-risk category.
• Testing at Butte College has yielded no positive cases in the last ten days.
• Guidance at both the federal (CDC) and state (CDPH) levels has moved from requiring masks to strongly encouraging masks in indoor settings.

Please note, masks will still be required on our buses and in areas designated as healthcare facilities due to state regulations.

While masks are no longer required indoors on campus, we strongly recommend their use. This is, however, a personal choice each of you will make based on your own circumstance and comfort level. Please be respectful of one another, masked or unmasked, as we transition to this new phase.

We will continue to provide masks in classrooms and around campus for your convenience.

On February 8, 2022, the Governor signed Senate Bill 114 (“SB 95”) into law. This law requires employers to provide up to 80 hours (for full-time employees and prorated for part-time employees) of COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave (SPSL) to employees who are unable to work or telework due to various qualifying reasons related to COVID-19, with up to 40 of those hours available only when an employee or family member tests positive (with documentation of positive test results required).

The SPSL is effective back to January 1, 2022, and expires on September 30, 2022.

Please complete the attached certification and email it to Heather Dwyer, Human Resources Benefits Analyst at dwyerhe@goudounet.com if one of the below-mentioned reasons applies to you.

If you took paid leave or unpaid leave on or after January 1, 2022, because you were unable to work or telework for one of the following reasons:

• Caring for Yourself: The employee is subject to quarantine or isolation period related to COVID-19 as defined by an order or guidelines of the California Department of Public Health, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or a local health officer with jurisdiction over the workplace, has been advised by a healthcare provider to quarantine, or is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and seeking a medical diagnosis.
• Caring for a Family Member: The covered employee is caring for a family member who is subject to a COVID-19 quarantine or isolation period or has been advised by healthcare provided to quarantine due to COVID-19 or is caring for a child whose school or place of care is closed or unavailable due to COVID-19 on the premises.
• Vaccine-Related: The covered employee is attending a vaccine or booster appointment for themselves or a family member or cannot work or telework because they have vaccine-related symptoms or are caring for a family member with vaccine-related symptoms.
• You have tested positive for COVID-19 or you are providing care for a family member who tested positive for COVID-19 (with documentation of test results).

Good morning everyone – and Happy Friday!

As you gear up for what I hope will be a wonderful weekend.  I thought I’d drop you a line about the new COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave (SPSL) that the Governor signed into law this past Wednesday. You may recall a prior iteration of COVID-19 supplemental sick leave last year. This leave program is somewhat similar to last year’s program, but there are some significant differences. We are analyzing those differences now, and there will be more information forthcoming as the effective date of this new law draws closer. For now, a couple of key takeaways that I hope are helpful:

 

1. The law isn’t effective yet – it technically goes into effect on Saturday, February 19, 2022;
2. This will be retroactive to January 1, 2022;
3. The law runs through September 30, 2022;
4. Employees who cannot work or telework for the following reasons can use SPSL:
1. Employee is quarantined or in a COVID-19 isolation period by order or guidance of the CA Dept. of Public Health (CDPH), federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC), or local public health officer with jurisdiction over the workplace;
2. Employee has been advised by a health care provider to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19;
3. Attendance at a medical appointment for themselves or a family member to receive a COVID-19 vaccine or booster;
4. Employee is experiencing symptoms, or caring for a family member experiencing symptoms, of COVID-19 related to a COVID-19 vaccine or booster;
5. Employee is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and is seeking diagnosis;
6. Employee is caring for a family member who is either subject to CDPH, CDC or local health officer order or guidance to isolate or quarantine; OR has been advised to isolate or quarantine by a health care provider;
7. Employee is caring for a child whose school or place of care is closed or otherwise unavailable for reasons related to COVID-19 on the premises;
8. The employee, or a family member that the employee is caring for, tests positive for COVID.

You may have questions about the specifics of how to access or utilize this leave, and I know that this email has not addressed those.  Additional communication will be forthcoming, please be patient.  In the meantime, it looks like we are in for some beautiful weather this weekend….I hope you can enjoy it.

Dear Colleagues,

 

Last week the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated its guidance on face masks effective February 16^th.   The new guidance lifts the requirement of wearing face masks in most indoor facilities for vaccinated people.  Those who are unvaccinated will still be required to wear face coverings indoors. Many of you may be wondering, how does this affect Butte College?  The short answer is we will continue our current district-wide mask requirement.

Let me share some of the reasons for this decision:

• Wearing masks indoors is an important tool against the spread of COVID-19.  Keeping this tool in place is especially important at Butte College because we do not have a vaccination/test requirement for students.
• Enforcing a masking rule that differentiates between vaccinated and unvaccinated people would be difficult and unnecessarily divisive.
• Masks continue to be required in K-12 settings, at Chico State, and at many of our nearby community colleges.
• Maintaining our current mask requirement provides students with the consistency they have asked for in our response to COVID-19.

Covid Testing

On-site Covid testing will resume on Monday, February 7 following our existing testing schedule for the main campus and the Chico Center. We are anticipating an increase in testing volume with the return of face-to-face instruction and testing being made available to students. We will be monitoring testing capacity closely and are preparing to make adjustments to the testing schedule if necessary.

And we continue to recommend that all employees, even the vaccinated, take full advantage of our Covid testing services.

Vaccine Availability

The Butte College Student Health Center has Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines available to both students and employees. Vaccinations, including boosters, are also available at various sites throughout Butte and Glenn counties using the MyTurn website (http://myturn.ca.gov/)

Masking

As you return to your workspaces please remember to wear a mask. If you need one, we do have a supply of N95 or KN95 masks available through Facilities.

DEI – Did you know? End Stereotyping Campaign: My Culture Is Not a Costume

It is time to change the conversation around cultural appropriation. The term has been reduced to mere internet outrage and dismissed as a tool devised by the “fun police” to keep people from enjoying Halloween. But the reality is cultural appropriation is a stain on American history. It is the manifestation of one of the earliest, most enduring racist ideals: the belief that people who belong to marginalized cultures are somehow less than human. Once you have dehumanized someone, you can co-opt their culture with ease; their language, dress, and customs are not worthy of the respect you reserve for your own. To learn more about cultural appropriation and please share this flyer with students and let's change the conversation around cultural appropriation together.

The library can see if there are affordable ebook options for your course through the library. We can also place print materials on reserve for your courses at all Butte College locations. Though textbooks from large publishers are usually not available through the library, we don’t mind checking as sometimes there is an exception. Pop-Up Food Pantry

The Roadrunner Hub is hosting a pop-up food pantry today on Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will be giving out grocery bags of food near the bus stops! Share this flyer with your students. USAW is a statewide effort led by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the Community College League of California, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges, with support from many other organizations. Oct. 17–21 the Chancellor’s Office and their statewide partners will host daily webinars 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. (flex credit available) intended for participants to understand how and why it is important to ensure strong cross-departmental collaboration for improving undocumented student outcomes. BC Art Gallery

Don’t miss “Piecing it Together” by Elizabeth Lee! Elizabeth Lee is a Hmong American visual artist, curator, and art educator with a BFA from CSU, Chico. You have two more weeks to see these delicate and intricate gouache paintings that explore the effects of generational trauma. She shares her personal stories of trauma passed down from her refugee parents who endured the tragedies of the Vietnam War. The emphasis is on stillness, healing and processing through these compartmentalized images and viewers are encouraged to participate in an artist-designed interactive.

It's that magical time of year when the weather starts cooling off (well, at least below triple digits anyways!), leaves start to turn, and the Environmental Horticulture nursery has its fall plant sale! We are a part of the Sierra Oro Farm Trail again, so we will be open every Saturday in October from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., right down here in the Environmental Horticulture Nursery on the Main Campus. Don't have a Farm Trail ticket? No worries - you'll still get 30% off all your plants when you come on a Saturday! We'll also feature a large selection of pumpkins grown right here on our campus farm!

Law Enforcement Academy Crime Scene Scenarios

Butte College Law Enforcement Academy will be participating in crime scene exercises on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in and around the AHPS, TE, & LS Buildings, the core of campus, all parking lots, and training grounds. DEI – Did you know? Orange Shirt Day is September 30^th

The Butte College Native American Center invites our campus community to stand with Indigenous Peoples by participating in Orange Shirt Day tomorrow, a day early (for more participation), Thursday, September 29^th. Orange Shirt Day is an important event that acknowledges Indigenous peoples persevering over colonialism, racism, and cultural genocide. Wearing an orange shirt signifies a recognition of the emotional, mental, and physical trauma that First Nations endured during the residential/boarding school era. It represents Indigenous peoples acknowledging their history, but in a way that allows participation, peace, and solidarity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Join Us For the EOPS Fall 2022 Reception

EOPS will be holding a Fall 2022 Reception on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is for all students and staff to meet the EOPS team and learn about the services and support we offer to students. Newspaper Release Party

The first issue of the fall 22 student-produced newspaper, The Roadrunner, will be distributed on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Come celebrate with a slice of cake and meet the student journalists. We will be in the Campus Center lawn under the solar panels from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Student Equity Conference/Webinar Funds Available

Student Equity is accepting applications for equity-focused conferences and webinars for fall 2022. Priority will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria: 1) applicants attending or participating with students, 2) conference focuses on equity issues or an equity population with the most significant equity gaps at Butte College (Black/African American students, Latinx students, Native American students, Pacific Islander students, foster youth students, LGBTQ+ students), and 3) applicants who manage a specific equity program or project. If you are interested, please fill out and submit the conference and webinar funding request form.  A reminder that AB 1887 bans California public-funded institutions from traveling to states with discriminatory laws. The states that are prohibited currently are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. Undocumented Student Week of Action 2022

Save the date! The Undocumented Student Week of Action (USWA) will be held Oct. 17-21. USWA will feature a series of systemwide webinars and on-campus activities to raise awareness about the challenges undocumented students continue to face and will feature solutions that support their educational dreams. The series of daily webinars will be held from 9 – 10 a.m. Register here. Additional details about the on-campus activities will be provided soon. Your Safe Zone Placard Expires

...every two years! This is because the terminology and queer culture change and also because we're all learning. We can always use updating and practice. The Safe Zone training at Butte is a 3-hour introductory training that invites participants to learn about LGBTQ+ issues, provide resources, and create a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff exploring issues of sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression. This fall, you can attend Safe Zone:
